By Temkin Jafarov, Umid Niayesh - Trend:

The development of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan is a priority of Iran's foreign policy, Iranian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Mohammad Musa Hashemi Golpayegani told Trend Apr.16.

He said that the main priority of the foreign policy of the government of President Hassan Rouhani is the development of relations with neighboring countries.

The ambassador said that the efforts of the supreme leader, the president and other Iranian officials are aimed at the development of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Since the first days of independence of these countries, they have had ties with Iran. Despite the sanctions against Iran, these relations are developing.

The ambassador went on to add that the trade turnover between Iran and Turkmenistan amounted to $4 billion in 2014, but it is expected that the figure will reach $6 billion in 2015.

The diplomat said that the exact number of Iranian companies operating in Turkmenistan is not known. However, one can say that there are nearly 80 Iranian companies registered in Turkmenistan.

Golpayegani went on to add that Ashgabat is located 40 kilometers away from the border with Iran, and that is why the majority of Iranian companies operating in the country do not have an office there. Therefore, it is impossible to tell the exact number of companies and the volume of investments.

The ambassador said that Iran currently exports various products to Turkmenistan through four checkpoints. The total value of non-oil products exported annually from Iran to Turkmenistan has reached $1.35 billion.

The diplomat said that in 2014, the trade turnover between the two countries increased by 20 percent.
