Azerbaijan dissatisfied that Iranian companies operate in occupied territories of country

Measures must be taken against Iranian companies operating in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the minister of economy and industry of Azerbaijan, co-chairman of the State Commission on cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran on economic, trade and humanitarian spheres Shahin Mustafayev said Apr.16.

He made the remarks at the meeting with Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei, who is on a visit in the country, said the report of the ministry Apr.16.

Mustafayev said at the meeting that the political, economic and humanitarian relations between Azerbaijan and Iran develop, and visits of the heads of state have special importance in the expansion of cooperation, according to the message.

The cooperation between the two countries on oil and gas, energy, industry, finance, banking, tourism, customs, and melioration spheres is developing successfully, there are great potential for cooperation in pharmacology, petro-chemical spheres. The opportunities for expansion of cooperation will be discussed at the next meeting of the State Commission in Tehran.

Mustafayev spoke about Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territories, refugees and IDPs, destruction of historical monuments, mosques, and graveyards. Saying that a number of Iranian companies operates in occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Mustafayev noted that Iranian government should take measures to prevent such cases.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

Ali Rabiei said that Iran attaches great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan, shared opinion on development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations.

Informing about his ministry's activity, Rabiei drew attention to cooperation opportunities in different spheres of economy.

They also exchanged opinions about issues of mutual interest.
