Baku urges West to make statement on Azerbaijani refugees

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr.18
By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

EU and UK, which have made a statement on the court decision on the case of Rasul Jafarov, should also make a statement on Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hikmet Hajiyev told Trend Apr.18.

The attention of the EU and UK to an individual criminal case can't but cause surprise, according to the spokesperson.

The rule of law, the protection of the fundamental freedoms and independence of the trial has been ensured in Azerbaijan, said Hajiyev adding that all are equal before the law.
Azerbaijan fully complies with its international obligations, said Hajiyev.

He said Rasul Jafarov was brought to trial for tax evasion, misappropriation and other illegal activities proven by the court.

Furthermore, Hajiyev said that in accordance with the fundamental international documents on human rights, the EU and UK, which have made a statement on the court decision on the case of Jafarov, should have the similar sensitive attitude to over a million of Azerbaijanis, who have become refugees and IDPs as a result of occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
