The EU has made progress in cooperation with Azerbaijan, Armenia and Belarus, said Johannes Hahn, the Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement.

He made the remarks at a press conference May 20 in Riga, Latvia.

"The EU was able to establish a successful energy partnership with Azerbaijan," he said, adding, "The organization remains committed to the Eastern Partnership, and we intend to continue to strengthen relations with our neighbors."

Hahn noted that the EU continues active work with each country of the Eastern Partnership.

"It is very important for the EU to diversify energy supplies," he said. "Our relations with the countries of the Eastern Partnership are also based on the development of trade and economy."

Hahn further said it is important to keep the interest towards the Eastern Partnership both in political and humanitarian terms.

"The EU will allocate additional funds for the development of the media in the countries of Eastern Partnership in the next two years," he said.

The Eastern Partnership program is one of the two directions of the EU neighborhood policy. It was developed in 2004 to create more solid relations between the EU and neighboring countries.

The first summit of the Eastern Partnership was held in 2009 in Prague, the Czech Republic, the second - in 2011 in Warsaw, Poland, the third summit was held in November 2013 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
