Azerbaijan hopes that the US, as the co-chair country of the OSCE Minsk Group, will be active in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Ismayil Ismayilov said July 2 in Baku on the celebration of 239th anniversary of the US Independence Day.

US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta spoke about the achievements of the United States over these years.

The diplomat also said that the US and Azerbaijan continue to work on the creation of strong relations between the two countries.

Ismayilov congratulated the American people on their Independence Day on behalf of the government of Azerbaijan. He said that relations between the two countries have been developing in various fields, especially in economic and security sphere since 1992.

"Azerbaijan assisted the United States in operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan, and it is ready to cooperate with the US in the fight against terrorism in the future," he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
