Time to establish working group on human rights violation in Europe

Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 7

By Elchin Mehdiyev - Trend:

The Council of Europe has today made an ambiguous statement that can be considered unambiguously. This organization has stated about unilateral leaving the Joint Working Group on Human Rights with Azerbaijan.

Whom will Europe harm by its demarche?

It should be recalled that the working group resumed its activity on the initiative of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland. Jagland stated about the CE's leaving the group.

By these actions Europe let down not only itself but everyone who was interested in the work of this group, namely, well known human rights defenders and representatives of international non-governmental organizations in Azerbaijan, having a consultative status at the UN bodies.

How does Europe explain leaving the group?

It explained this by the "deterioration" of human rights in Azerbaijan.

Advocating for the release of several people convicted for specific crimes, this organization hasn't done anything concrete for justice towards more than one million people.
While standing for the release of several people, who have broken the law, the CE "forgets" about more than one million refugees and internally displaced persons, whose rights were toughly violated and who were subjected to inhuman persecution and ethnic cleansing. No one notices this in Europe.

Today, the Old World is faced with thousands of refugees. Xenophobia, racism, and religious intolerance are exhibited towards them. Today it is time to establish a working group on human rights violation in Europe.

It should be stressed that Europe "burns the bridges" of cooperation with Azerbaijan. However, it is unlikely that these smoldering pieces will warm Europe in winter, when it faces problems with the delivery of Russian gas. And then, as usual, all attention will turn towards Azerbaijan.
