Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 13

Azerbaijan played no role in the negotiations on Iran's nuclear program with the West in the P5+1 format, but Azerbaijan is a neighbor of Iran, so the agreement is beneficial for Baku, as well, Steve Fagin, director of the Iran Office at the US Department of State, told reporters at a press conference in Baku Nov.13.

The main purpose of his visit to Azerbaijan, as he himself said, was to discuss the nuclear agreement with Azerbaijani officials.

Fagin said that if Iran meets its obligations under the nuclear agreement, it will mean that Iran's nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes and it will benefit the entire region. Azerbaijan, Fagin said, will also be able to take advantage of these benefits.

He further said that Iranian businessmen are interested in the Azerbaijani market.

The spokesman of the US Department of State, during his two-day visit to Azerbaijan, held meetings at the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Financial Monitoring Service, as well as the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was reached between Iran and the P5+1 (the US, the UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) on July 14 and was ratified on July 20, with issuance of UN Security Resolution 2231.

Iran is obliged under the agreement to narrow its nuclear activities, while the international community is, in return, expected to lift its economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
