Mazahir Panahov: Referendum to serve for stability in Azerbaijan

Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 18

Trend:

The referendum to be held in Azerbaijan Sept. 26 will serve to maintain stability in the country, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mazahir Panahov said Aug. 18 at a meeting with heads of district election commissions.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to hold a referendum Sept. 26 for making amendments to the country’s constitution.

“Azerbaijan is developing at a high pace, the standard of living of the population is increasing,” Panahov said. “Previous elections in the country were held in line with the highest standards and we have to hold the upcoming referendum at the same level.”

He added that some people in the world use the election to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

“We must not let this happen, we have to in time eliminate the smallest shortcomings,” the CEC chairman said. “Informing precinct election commissions will eliminate the shortcomings.”

Elections in Azerbaijan may serve as an example for the whole world, Panahov added.
