Mard: More attention needed for co-op with GUAM

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 7

By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:

Issues related to the cooperation with GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development have been put on the agenda in Brussels, Malena Mard, head of the EU delegation in Azerbaijan, said.

She made the remarks Nov. 7 in Baku at a round table meeting dedicated to the topic “GUAM and Visegrad Group: possibilities and limitations of regional cooperation.”

It is necessary to pay more attention to the issues related to cooperation with GUAM and its member states, she said, adding that GUAM is also a part of Europe.

The GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development is a regional organization of four post-Soviet states: Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova.

The GUAM format was created by the post-Soviet states in 1997 during the summit of heads of states of the European Union in Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the format and four years later withdrew. In 2006, Ukraine and Azerbaijan announced plans to further increase the GUAM member relations by renaming the organization GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development and establishing its headquarters in the Ukrainian capital.

Azerbaijan assumed the chairmanship in GUAM since January 1, 2016.
