Azerbaijan and India celebrate 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations (PHOTO)

India and Azerbaijan commemorated the 25th anniversary of establishment of their diplomatic relations with a cultural event held at the Rashid Behbudov State Song Theater in Baku.

India and Azerbaijan commemorated the 25th anniversary of establishment of their diplomatic relations with a cultural event held at the Rashid Behbudov State Song Theater in Baku.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mr. Novruz Guliyev, Member of Milli Majlis and Deputy Head of its Cultural Committee Ms. Jala Aliyeva, Head of First Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Khazar Farhadov, and several senior officials and dignitaries and the Indian Association in Azerbaijan.

Ambassador of India, Sanjay Rana read out the letters written by the President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev and by External Affairs Minister of India, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj to the Foreign Minister of Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov on the occasion of 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

President of India wrote in his letter: “I am glad that in these 25 years, our cordial bilateral relations have progressed well. Our expanding relations in all fields and our cooperation including political, economic, energy, cultural as well as our people-to-people exchanges have been mutually beneficial and contributed significantly to the peace, stability and prosperity of our respective regions. It is my sincere belief that as we look to the future with hope, India’s diverse ties with Azerbaijan will effectively build upon the achievements of these years and attain newer heights.”

The speakers at the event mentioned that India was among the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan as an independent Republic and the two countries established diplomatic relations formally on 28th February 1992.
Speakers mentioned that bilateral economic engagement between Indian and Azerbaijan is steadily rising. Their bilateral trade has increased by more than 60 percent in 2016 based on growing exports from both sides. India’s ONGC-Videsh is an equity partner in the ACG oil fields and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. India and Azerbaijan are working together on international projects like the development of International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

The Cultural event started with a performance of traditional Indian dance Mohini Attam by Nisha Govindan. There were colorful performances of Indian dances by Chandramukhi Dance group led by Ms. Oksana Rasulova and traditional Azerbaijani dances by Mehriban School of Dance and Mirvari dance group. The versatile Azerbaijani singer Mr. Nuray Kardashov sang both Azerbaijani and Hindi songs.
The 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations is being marked by a year-long ‘India-Azerbaijan Friendship Dostluq Festival’ which would include events celebrating the shared ethos of multi-culturalism and friendship such as celebrating shared festivals of Novruz and Holi.
