The Yeni Siyasat (YeS) election bloc will not joint an opposition meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 25.

Following the announcement, Eldaniz Guliyev, a prominent member of YeS, said that the bloc has a countenance attitude toward all arrangements and actions by democracy-minded forces. “Every member of our bloc is free in joining as an individual the (upcoming) meeting. However, we will not participate as a bloc. We have not been invited to discussions over the arrangements for the meeting. In addition, the holding of a meeting of such scale is a very serious action, to be planned thoroughly. YeS bloc thinks that the struggle for democracy should be carried on through the values and rules of conceptual thinking, thereby giving no opportunity to the manifestation of force,” Guliyev explained.

Meanwhile, the Azadlyg (freedom) election bloc also announced it had no plans to join the upcoming meeting. The first deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (AXC, reformist’s wing), Fuad Mustafayev said that the bloc had not approved any decision on joining the meeting, but “our members support it.” “We welcome all actions aimed to support democracy and the holding of free elections. Every member of the Azadlyg bloc can participate in the rally. But the bloc has not made a decision on joining the meeting as a political force,” Mustafayev said.

The meeting will start with a march from the 20 Yanvar (January) metro station and end in the nearby Galaba square. Among the organizers of the meeting are several parties, including Vahdat (unity), Islamists, National Democrats, as well as ATA party bloc, and 20 NGOs, etc.
