A major election bloc sees to be upbeat over the expected changes in the Electoral Code, which were floated by both opposition forces and international organizations.

“Let’s not have it in the way that a decision on making no changes in the Election Code and the discussion of the document at parliament means putting the end to the issue,” the chairman of the National Independence Party of Azerbaijan (NIPA) and member of the Yeni Siyasat (YeS) election bloc, Ali Aliyev told Trend.

According to him, the above decision by Milli Majlis will not bury an initiative towards the change of the membership composition of
election commissions. Aliyev added that the parliament’s non-approval of changes in the membership composition of election commissions does not mean the end of all, and it is possible to “get our own way and get the Code changed” in a relevant manner.

“We think that all opposition forces, once united, must seek and achieve the change of the membership composition of election commissions. As to NIPA’s position, we proceed from the forming of election commissions on a parity basis. In general, it is necessary to make progressive changes in [the forming of] commissions, as election commissions are a crucial factor in determining the results of elections,” Aliyev said.

He went on to say that opposition parties will by no means participate in the elections, even if the efforts, exerted so far and to be exerted, fail to produce the (expected) effect. “Requirements by democratic forces must be taken into consideration, in order to ensure that no speculation or falsification is allowed [during the counting of votes]. In addition, the taking of election commission out of the control of any side is also a must,” he concluded.
