The leader of the National Unity movement, Lala Shovkat Hajiyeva has not applied to join the Azadlyg (freedom) election bloc yet, according to a members of the Council of Chairmen of Azadlyg, Ali Karimli.

Lala Shovkat yesterday announced she was quitting the Yeni Siyasat (YeS) bloc she had founded with Eldar Namazov, the former aide to ex-President Heydar Aliyev.

Karimli, also the chairman of the reformist wing of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), said that should Ms. Shovkat apply to the (Azadlyg) bloc, this issue would be immediately considered by the leaders of the parties forming Azadlyg.

Beside PFPA, the bloc unites Mussavat, once the most powerful opposition party in Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan Democratic Party, whose chairman [the former parliamentary speaker] Rassul Guliyev lives in exile in the United States.

“I will be happy to take part in the (upcoming) parliamentary elections with Ms. Lala Shovkat. However, the final decision [on Shovkat’s joining the Azadlyg] will be made by the leaders of the bloc and she herself,” Karimli noted.

According to Karimli, if Lala Shovkat wouldn’t joint the (Azadlyg) bloc, he would move on cooperating with her on seeking the holding of democratic elections.
