The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan considers a proposal by the Iranian side concerning the cancellation and streamlining of visa regime between the countries, according to ministry spokesman Bunyad Husseinov.

Husseinov told Trend that the issue is presently studied at the level of internal consultations. He expressed hope for the long-waited solution to the problem.

Earlier, the Iranian embassy presented a note to Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry, urging official Baku to meet the terms of the corresponding 1993 agreement between the countries on the cancellation of visa regime.

In accordance with the document, the citizens of Azerbaijan and Iran will be allowed to freely cross the state frontier (between the countries), using air or sea channels, and stay at the territory of the country of arrival within 15 days, with the visa to be obtained in case of a prolonged stay (in the country of arrival).

The document also sets out that the corresponding rules will be applied to the citizens of Azerbaijan, crossing the state border with Iran by cars, but on condition of issuing general passports to those citizens.

Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mr. Afshar Suleymani reiterated that his country is ready to start consultations with Azerbaijan over the reduction of visa payments.
