NEXT MEETING OF AZADLIG ELECTION BLOCK HELD

Parliamentary elections scheduled for 6 November 2005 in Azerbaijan must be held in a free, democratic and transparent way, it has been stated at the rally of the Azadlig (Freedom) electoral opposition block in Baku today, Trend reports.

Representatives, composing the oppositionist parties election block, among them chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) вЂ" reformists, Ali Kerimli, chairman of the Musavat Party, Isa Gambar, 1-st deputy chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA), Sardar Djalaloglu and other representatives of some opposition parties, including “Umid”, National Demoratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) took part at the event. The principal slogans of the action were “Freedom”, “Free Elections”, “Resignation”, “Karabakh”. Along with the flags of the parties, flags of the orange colour have been also hoisted at the meeting.

Isa Gambar stated, that actions of the electoral block will go on in all Baku districts, as well as in the regions of Azerbaijan, until the democratic forces achieve holding of free and

transparent elections in the country. According to him, the authorities must follow the requirements of the international organizations and the opposition in regard to the making amendments to the country’s Election Code. Ali Kerimli during his speech underlined the necessity for retaining the existing union between the oppositionist parties in the name of holding fair and just parliamentary elections. Sardar Djalaoglu noted the importance of the continuation of actions and the fight for achieving democratic elections in the country. The widow of the assassinated well-known journalist, Elmar Husseynov, Rushana Husseynova also spoke at the meeting and called on to continue the fight for freedom of expression and the democracy in the country, as well as for the quickest revealing of her husband’s murderers.

Resolution in which the appeal to hold free and just parliamentary elections, the necessity for introducing changes to the Electoral Code, removal of unlawful conviction from a number of the oppositionist leaders and creating conditions for them to participate in the elections, the soonest possible disclosure of murderers and initiators of the murder of the well-known journalist Elmar Husseynov, creating equal conditions for participation of opposition representatives at the elections and etc., has been adopted on the results of the action.
