LATVIA, AZERBAIJAN TO COOPERATE IN DEFENSE SECTOR

An agreement on bilateral cooperation in the area of defense was signed between the Ministers of Defense of Azerbaijan and Latvia on Monday in Riga during the official visit of Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev to Latvia, Trend reports.

During the meeting with its Azerbaijani counterpart the Minister of Defense of Latvia, Einar Repse, marked that Latvia increased its assistance to South African countries after gaining a membership at NATO, and now it’s time to activate the bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Azerbaijan in the area of defense. Repshe offered the military forces of Azerbaijan to attend trainings in the school for suppers in Adazi near Riga and in Diving school of Baltic countries Liepaja, as well as establish practical military-political contacts under the cooperation.

E.Repshe said that Latvia is interested in strengthening of the cooperation between NATO and Azerbaijan and assured that Azerbaijan can depend on the Latvia’s support in integration into the Euro-Atlantic bodies. Latvia very appreciates the participation of Azerbaijan in the international peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, he noted.

S.Abiev also marked that Azerbaijan is interested in the development of multilateral cooperation with Latvia. He invited Repshe to visit Azerbaijan.

The Defense Minister also met the commander of the National Military Forces of Latvia Gaidis Andrejs Zeibots, the chairman of the Seym Ingrida Udre, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Artis Pabriks and so on.

On Tuesday Abiyev visited Coast Security Services of Latvian Navy.
