SWG SATISFIED WITH RESULTS OF BAKU MEETING

“The 18th meeting of the Caspian countries’ Special Working Group (SWG) on Development of Convention on Caspian Status was fruitful and constructive,” Khalaf Khalafov, the Azerbaijani Presinden’s Special Representative on Caspian Problem, said to a news conference on the results of the SWG 2-day meeting, Trend reports.

The sides achieved progress, particularly, on some items of the draft convention. The negotiations concerned delineation of sea bed, use schedule of Caspian surfaces, safety of military activities on the sea, shipping. According to Khalafov, there is some rapprochement in the positions of the sides. “We are ready to deepen the cooperation on all issues,” he stated

Erik Utembayev, the representative of Kazakhstan, also mentioned constructiveness of the negotiations. Movsun Baharvendi, the representative of Iran, stressed big and positive changes in the issue and noted that all sides believed that the work on the convention would be completed soon.

According to Russian representative Igor Yusupov, number of disagreements decreased.

The 18th meeting also made a decision on holding of next meeting in Astana.
