Рђzerbaijan may refuse natural gas import from Russia

Рђzerbaijan may refuse purchasing gas from Gazexport Ltd (a branch of Gazprom JSC), president of the Azerbaijan State Oil Company (SOCAR) Natig Aliyev said in a statement on 9 November, Trend reports.

"Russia sells gas to other CIS countries for $140-160 per 1,000 cubic meters. In case we are offered the same price, we will refuse gas purchases. We cannot buy gas at such prices”, he said.

Aliyev said, Azerbaijan has a contract with Russia for 2006 gas deliveries. В"We have no information on increasing the price for the gas to be imported. It is known today Azerbaijan needs a large amount of gas. We use every opportunity. The volume of the gas produced does not cover the country’s demands, and it brought to importing the fuel from Russia. It is advantageous for Azerbaijan to import gas, as thanks to it we provide electrical power stations with fuel, save mazut and ensure the efficient operation of the oil refineries”, he concluded.

Gazexport Ltd delivered 3,78 billion cubic meters gas in January- October 2005 to Azerbaijan against 3,93 billion cubic meters during 10 months of 2004. This year SOCAR plans to buy some 4,5 billion cubic meters gas from Gazexport at the price of $60 per 1,000 cu m. The natural gas is delivered to the country through the pipeline Shirvnaovka-Gazimagomed.
