Djanni Buquicchio: Changes must be introduced into Election Code of Azerbaijan

Changes are to be introduced into the valid electoral legislation of Azerbaijan, the Council of Europe Venice Commission (VC) secretary Djanni Buquicchio being in Baku for participation in the two-day international conference dedicated to the 10-th anniversary of adopting the Constitution of Azerbaijan said in a statement, Trend reports citing the ANS TV channel.

В"I hoped the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan would pass with the larger level of compliance with the international standards, however, the facts of the legislation violation brought my expectations to nothing”, the Venice Commission secretary said, noting, that the facts “will be likely” to remove. According to Buquicchio, the Azerbaijan’s Election Code “is not so ideal, although there are some items there, which would have enabled to hold good elections”.

At the same time, the VC secretary assessed highly the Azerbaijan President’s measures on punishing of some officials who had interfered into the process of the votes counting and thus, having violated the country’s Election Code.

В"It is appropriate, that the head of the state has taken such a move. I hope, all violations of the law will be shortly removed, and the individuals, which have violated the law, will be punished”, Buquicchio said, stressing, Azerbaijan should carry on its cooperation with OSCE, VC and other international institutions aimed at developing of the “perfect Election Code”.
