The Azerbaijani Seismological Service has agreed to cooperate with European institutions to conduct joint research.

During the session of the European Geophysical Society General Assembly in Vienna, the Azerbaijani National Center for the Seismological Service has agreed to cooperate with the institutions of Geophysics from the Czech Republic, Germany, Turkey and Greece, director of the National Center Gurban Yetirmishli told Trend.

He said that joint projects will be carried out with the European countries' institutions within the framework of grant projects.

Yetirmishli said a project to identify earthquake-prone areas of the Absheron peninsula will be carried out in 2011 with the support of the Science Development Fund. The project will also include trainings at seismic stations, co-conducted by Georgia and the U.S.

Furthermore, in 2011 Azerbaijan was the first CIS country to install seismometers in the sea. The three seismometers to be placed at the bottom of the Caspian Sea will provide an opportunity to examine the epicenter of aftershocks and their depth with better precision.
