The Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry's expedition, consisting of five members, will study the glacier in the source of the Mahmuddere River in Tufandag for the first time in 35 years, Ministry Spokesman Irada Ibrahimova told Trend.
Following the studies, a plan of the glacier territory will be developed, as well as its size, area, volume and exact coordinates will be determined, she said. The area will be marked up with special splines to study the dynamics of the glacier.
The studies are conducted under President Ilham Aliyev's decree on "Measures for the Integrated Hydro-Meteorological and Ecological Research of the Bazarduzu-Shahdagh-Tufandag Greater Caucasus Ecosystem" dated December 27, 2008.
The studies aimed to estimate the impact of global climate change - global warming on glaciers and rivers in Azerbaijan. Work to identify the dynamics of changes of the glaciers will be conducted annually.
