Azerbaijan, Baku, April 24 /Trend I.Isabalayeva/

Despite the fact that inspection on the Metsamor NPP in Armenia has repeatedly held annually, the reports on their results are not provided to Azerbaijan, the president of the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Mahmud Karimov told journalists.

Azerbaijan has repeatedly appeal to receive the report but without result. Therefore, we know nothing about the activities of the NPP, Karimov said.

According to him, Azerbaijan said about the danger of NPP Metsamor for the region because it is outdated and does not meet safety requirements.

"The EU shares this view. The European Commission also calls for nuclear shutdown. But Armenia doesn't attach special importance to these requirements, moreover, it is building a second unit at Metsamor," the president of ANAS said.

The Armenian government has officially asked the IAEA for assistance in the issue of extending the service life of existing NPP for another four years. The license for the operation of power expires on September 1, 2016.

Metsamor NPP was built in 1970. After the devastating Spitak earthquake the activity of this plant had been suspended, but in 1995, despite international protests, the work of the station was reactivated, and in addition, a second reactor was launched.

Given the great number of minor earthquakes in the past 10 years in this zone, as well as the intensification of seismic processes indicated by seismologist researches, in case of a big accident in Metsamor NPP, not only Armenia, but also all countries in the Southern Caucasus and the Middle East would be seriously affected.
