The major part of work on the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku has already been done, with the completion of concrete frame reinforcement, project's construction director Phil Benson told journalists today.

The major part of work on the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku has already been done, with the completion of concrete frame reinforcement, project's construction director Phil Benson told journalists today.

"General concrete work has been completed and the builders have launched work on roof construction," Benson said.

He added that along with the main steel work and roof trusses, there is still work to be done, in particular that comprise mechanical and electrical services and the clading , external works, and the ongoing progress of internal block works dividing the space.

He stressed that a combination of local and regional materials is used for construction in order to achieve the fastest progress of work.

According to Benson, the arena will be comprised of four main stores on the ground and one underground level.

He noted, it will be a multi-use Arena, which could host other kinds of sports events, as well as cultural events and concerts.

The arena would also include dining rooms, kitchens, and two auxiliary rooms. Above the auxiliary rooms, the VIP areas will be set up.

In addition, the arena would have a two-storey restaurant, from which the arena would be visible.

The National Gymnastics Arena will also have rooms for international media and sponsors during international competitions, as well as a control center with all the modern requirements.

The arena's territory is 24.000 square meters, including underground parking for over 300 cars.

The National Gymnastics Arena, which is under construction at Heydar Aliyev Avenue near the "Koroglu" metro station in Baku, is designed for 6,000 seats. The first event to be held at the arena is the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship 2014.
