Religious radicalism and extremism have turned into one of the main bases for terrorism, chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organisations Elshad Iskandarov said at the international conference on 'Strengthening international cooperation in the fight against terrorism' today.
He said that according to the statistics, despite most of terrorist groups are motivated from a religious point of view, in fact, there are few acts of terrorism committed on religious grounds.
"This is not as simple as it seems," he said. "One must recognise that radicalism and extremism hiding behind religion, pose a threat to the society. Later it will create a basis for spreading terrorism."
He stressed the need to combat directly against the origins of the problem.
He said that there is a great need for joint effort of the international community in this issue.
