The prosecutor's office of Turkey has prepared the full text of the charges on the assassination attempt on former Turkish President Turgut Özal filed against retired Brigadier General of Turkish Army Levent Ersez, Star newspaper reported on Friday.
The indictment was submitted to the Criminal Court of Ankara and it is expected that if adopted, the prosecutor would demand life imprisonment for Ersez.
It is reported that General Ersez was also previously accused of involvement in Ergenekon suspected of anti-government conspiracy.
Investigations into the cause of the Turkish President's death under mysterious circumstances in 1993 were resumed in connection with rumours that he was poisoned. Heart failure is still considered as the official version of his death. However, his wife claims her husband was poisoned. Özal's associates denied this version.
The prosecutor's office in Turkey took the action necessary to carry out the exhumation of Özal's body in mid-September last year, despite his family's refusal. The report on the study of tissue samples taken for analysis indicates the presence of poison.
The report also states that in spite of the discovery of the poison in the remains of the former president, it was not the actual cause of death. The report did not specify the exact cause of Özal's death.
