Scientists of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) have developed a method for cleaning oil-contaminated lands with plants, micro-organisms and invertebrates.

Some herbaceous plants, including mugwort, thistles, couch grass, invertebrates such as earthworms and micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeasts - have the ability to absorb the remnants of heavy metals and radionuclides in the soil, a report of the Department of Public Relations of the Central Apparatus of ANAS said.

According to the report, the researches in this area are conducted by the Institute of Botany, Institute of Radiation Problems and Institute of Microbiology within the framework of 'Development of methods for cleaning of Absheron from anthropogenic contaminants" project.

The studies meant for three years, are implemented within the framework of the grant project worth 183,000 euros of the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine.

The project's manager, the head of the laboratory of the Institute of Botany, corresponding member of ANAS Ibrahim Azizov said that the aim of the research is to bring such lands into a condition suitable for sowing.
