During 2013 the death toll in road accidents around the world was 1.2 million people with some 20 million injured and the resulting damage is estimated at $500 billion, Azerbaijani Interior Minister, Ramil Usubov said on Nov. 15.

Usubov made the remarks speaking at the Plenum of the Azerbaijani Supreme Court.

According to the minister, Azerbaijan has taken serious measures to ensure promotion of road traffic safety, but in spite of that there are still problems and shortcomings in this sphere.

Some 40.6 per cent of road accidents that occurred in Azerbaijan over the last four years are related to excessive speed where 33.3 per cent occurred due to the violation of the rules of overtaking and manoeuvre and 3.2 per cent to driving whilst intoxicated, the minister said.

According to Usubov, in this regard the leadership of the Main Criminal Investigation Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs will be given corresponding instructions and this issue will always be under special control.
