By Ilhame Isabalayeva - Trend:

Two new types of viruses, Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and Cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV) infecting cultivated and wild species of crops have been found in Azerbaijan, deputy director of the Genetic Resources Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and a Doctor of Biology, Mehraj Abbasov, told Trend on Jan. 22.

"The existence of these viruses in Azerbaijan has been revealed according to preliminary data. How and from which country they got into Azerbaijan is still unknown," he said.

Abbasov said it is also still unknown how these viruses may affect the plants and which losses may be incurred.

The scientist said it is too early to say whether these viruses will be found during the next harvest season.
