Iran bans use of Caspian mullet as food

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 5

By Temkin Jafarov - Trend:

The Caspian mullet has been infected with a virus, therefore the use of this fish is harmful and prohibited. This statement was made by the head of Veterinary Administration of Iran's Mazandaran province, Majid Bakhtiari, the Iranian İRNA news agency reported on March 5.

Mullet deaths are increasing daily, Bakhtiari said.

"An analysis of a dead fish was conducted which revealed a disease identical for both human and animals. The latest results of the analysis of the mullet which died in the past 45 days will be announced. Therefore, it is not recommended to eat this fish for the time being," Bakhtiari said.

Head of the Veterinary Administration said that the reason of the mullet disease is the pollution of the sea with industrial and household waste through rivers.

About six tons of various types of bony fish, including mullet, carp and others are caught in Mazandaran province every year.
