Illegal hunters in Iran's north eastern Golestan National Park shot the environmental guards who were following them.
Nobody was harmed in the incident which took place during a night ambush, Yahya Moradi, head of the Public Relations department of the Golestan Park said, Iran's Fars news agency reported on May 13.
The incident happened at 23:00 local time on May 12, Moradi said, adding that the two illegal hunters left their quarry and escaped.
The hunters were identified by the guards and the case is being investigated in the judiciary.
Iranian media outlets reported that more than 116 environmental guards were killed by illegal hunters in recent years in the country, meanwhile the number of the killed illegal hunters during the armed conflicts surpasses 360.
