Azerbaijani wins silver medal in women’s wrestling competition at Youth Olympic Games

Wrestling competitions are continuing as part of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Wrestling tournaments among women were held on the second day of competitions, according to a message from Azerbaijan's Wrestling Federation.

The federation said that an Azerbaijani athlete Leyla Gurbanova, who was competing in the weight class up to 52 kilograms, defeating her rivals from Canada, Ukraine and Salvador, proceeded to the finals of the competition.

In the finals, Gurbanova after a hard struggle was defeated by an athlete from Japan, and thus won a silver medal.

Wrestling matches are round robin. Wrestlers compete in each weight class in two subgroups. Winners in the subgroups struggle in the finals, and those winning the second place fight for a bronze medal.

Greco-Roman style wrestlers competed on the first day of tournament on Aug. 25.

Azerbaijani wrestler Jabbar Najafov (50 kilograms) won a silver medal, and Islambek Dadov (69 kilograms) won a gold medal.
