The decision of the UEFA Executive Committee to hold the 2020 European Championships (Euro 2020) matches in Baku is an important and historical decision for Azerbaijan, AFFA Secretary General Elkhan Mammadov told Trend on Sept.19.

He congratulated all sports fans in Azerbaijan on this occasion.

"To be honest, we still can't believe that Baku has been chosen to host Euro 2020 matches. Baku will host the quarter-finals of the European Championships in 2020. We need time to realize this fact. This is really a great occasion and positive fact for Azerbaijan," Mammadov said.

"Although our activities were aimed at getting the right to host the group stage games, we also highlighted readiness to host the quarter-final games in our bid. As a result, Baku became one of the four cities to host the quarter-final games."

He stressed that throughout a 30-day championship, Baku will host three group stage games and one quarter-final game. Mammadov said that while making the decision, UEFA took into account the state attention to football in Azerbaijan in recent years.

"It is noteworthy that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev supported this initiative from the first stage and this was one of the strong sides of our bid. Therefore, it is gratifying that UEFA made such a decision by taking this into account," AFFA secretary general stressed.

"I re-emphasize that President Aliyev supported this initiative from the very beginning and this factor was reflected in the bid."

EUFA Executive Committee announced on Sept.19 that Baku will host one quarter-final game of the Euro 2020 and three group stage matches.

Alongside with Baku, the cities of Munich, St. Petersburg and Rome will also host the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

The final and semi-final matches of Euro 2020 will be held in London (UK) on the Wembley Stadium.
