A panel session was held Oct. 3 as part of the 4th Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

The panel session, titled 'Problems of Journalism in the 21st Century amid Intercultural Dialogue and the Dialogue of Civilizations', was held within the roundtable meeting "Media Transformation in the Digital Age: New Development Trends".

The panel's moderator was Mikhail Gusman, the secretary general of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), first deputy director general at Russian news agency ITAR-TASS.

During the panel session, Peter Kropsch, the ex-president of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), CEO of Austria Press Agency (APA), said that the social media are today undergoing a dynamic development period.

Kropsch said the social media rectify some shortcomings of traditional media, as the process of placing information on them is very simple.

"But, the social media, too, have their drawbacks," he said.

However, Kropsch added that he considers the social media to be reliable sources of information.

He believes that the news agencies play and will continue playing an important role in the social life.
