Since ancient times, the geographical location of Azerbaijan at the crossroads of the largest trade routes has turned it into a regional center of trade, culture and science. Today independent Azerbaijan has again turned into a regional leader.

All large-scale projects, not only regional but also global ones are initiated in Azerbaijan. Among these projects are the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. The foundation of "Southern Gas Corridor" has recently been laid. It will play an important role in ensuring the energy security of Europe.

By ensuring political and economic stability, today Azerbaijan is doing everything possible to contribute to the establishment of a humanitarian dialogue on the global scale. One of these events - the traditional Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

"Multiculturalism is a way of life in Azerbaijan," Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at the opening of the forum. "However, this is a relatively new term. But there have been multicultural societies in Azerbaijan for centuries. The friendship and solidarity between peoples is a good example."

Azerbaijan, situated between the East and the West, recognized in the West and the Muslim world, has become a cultural bridge between different countries and religions.

It is symbolic that representatives from all over the world gather exactly in Baku to find the ways of peaceful coexistence. Because Azerbaijan better understands what is aggression, intolerance and ethnic cleansing, since 20 percent of its territories are under Armenian occupation. And over a million of Azerbaijani citizens have become refugees and IDPs as a result of this occupation and cannot return to their homes.

"Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the biggest threat to the region. The speedy settlement of this conflict in accordance with the international law will bring peace and greater development to this region and create new opportunities for the regional cooperation," President Aliyev said while speaking at the forum.

Double standards, religious and racial intolerance cause problems in various parts of the world and require finding new ways of peaceful coexistence.

Azerbaijani president said that from this point of view, multiculturalism has no alternative.

"I should note that the multiculturalism has no alternative in the modern world, as the vast majority of world countries are multinational states," the president said.

The president said if the multiculturalism fails, then it is obvious that its alternatives will be discrimination, racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-semitism.

"We have to raise our voice against these dangerous tendencies," he said.

The fight against the negative processes is strengthened in the world day by day and Azerbaijan is at the forefront of this fight.
