Two unknown persons doused the window of a mosque in Baku's Garachukhur settlement with flammable liquid and then broke down the door and threw a fiery bottle into the mosque, the Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Siyavush Heydarov told Trend on Nov.26.

He said the investigation for identifying these persons is underway.

"A taxi driver who brought them to the mosque has been detained. He is giving testimony. He is a resident of Ganja city and lives in Garachukhur," Heydarov said.

The deputy chairman added that both Shiites and Sunnis have always prayed in the mosque.

The State Fire Control Service of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Emergency Situations received an alert about outbreak of a fire in a mosque in the Garachukhur settlement of Baku's Surakhani district on Nov.26 at 02:38 (UTC/GMT +4 hours).

Around five square meters of carpet burned as a result of the fire in the mosque with a total area of 300 square meters, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Emergency Situations told Trend.
Three fire brigades were sent to the site and the fire was extinguished shortly after. The fact is under investigation.

The akhoond (a person who leads prayers in a mosque) of the Garachukhur mosque told the media that two unknown persons broke the glass, got inside and intentionally set fire in the mosque. He added that they also used force against the watchman of the mosque.
