Outgoing 2014 was successful for Azerbaijan both in the field of youth policy and sports, Azerbaijani Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov said at a press conference Dec. 29.

He said that Azerbaijani athletes confirmed the image of Azerbaijan as a sporting country in 2014, having won more than 800 medals, 275 of which were gold.

He said that many important international events and competitions were held in Azerbaijan in 2014, namely, the 30th European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee (EOC), the Global Forum on Youth Policy, the sixth World Cyber Games Championship.

The minister also raised the issue of construction of youth houses, the number of which has reached 30, in Azerbaijan.

"We would like the youth houses in Baku and districts to turn into youth headquarters and young people to be able to use the conditions created there," he said. "We also made a proposal about their financial support. We hope that next year we will be able to resolve this issue."

He also said that another interesting project - an essay contest entitled "What do I know about Azerbaijan?" has been implemented this year.

"Around 174 winners from all over the world came to Azerbaijan and witnessed what they wrote about the country.

"They left the country, becoming friends of Azerbaijan," Rahimov said.
