Azerbaijani gymnasts win first place in qualifying tournament

Azerbaijani gymnasts Ulyana Dyakova and Anatoly Leonov, performing together in mixed pairs acrobatics contest, won first place in qualifying tournament following static and tempo exercises held at the Open Joint Azerbaijan Championships in Gymnastics Disciplines in Baku March 5.

Dyakova and Leonov, taking first place in both types of programs, scored 54.536, running ahead of nearest rivals - a pair from Bulgaria - by 1.180 points.

The contests for medals on both types of exercises will be held March 6.

In group rhythmic gymnastics contests, after the performances with five ribbons, Azerbaijan's first national team ranked third with 15.783 points.

Russian national team leads with 18.166 points, being followed by French team with 16.400 points.

Azerbaijan's second team ranks fourth with 14.800 points.

The medals holders in this program will be announced after the performances with three pairs of clubs and two hoops.

The Open Joint Azerbaijan Championships in Gymnastics Disciplines kicked off in Baku on March 4. This is the test championship on the eve of the First European Games.

Coming from 22 countries, 133 gymnasts will compete for medals in both the all-around and the individual competitions.

Such stars of world gymnastics as two-time absolute world champion Yana Kudryavtseva (Russia, rhythmic gymnastics) Olympic silver medallist Filip Ude (Croatia), European champion Alexander Shatilov (Israel, both - competitive gymnastics) and many others are among them.

On the first day of competitions, the Azerbaijani gymnasts, Oleg Stepko and Kristina Pravdina won gold medals in all-around artistic gymnastics.

The Azerbaijani gymnast Petr Pahnyuk won the second place in the same type of competition.
