Baku Higher Oil School expands relations with Germany

Rector of Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS) Elmar Gasimov received Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Azerbaijan Mrs. Heidrun Tempel. In his welcoming speech BHOS Rector informed the guest about BHOS history. Mr. Gasimov pointed out that BHOS was established within SOCAR in 2011 according to the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev. He also made known that BHOS first of all aimed at educating highly qualified engineers for petroleum and chemical industries. Particularizing the fact that the national economy was mainly based on the petroleum industry, the Rector underlined that this specialization would always be in great demand in Azerbaijan. He drew attention of the Ambassador to the significance of free of charge education programmes offered at BHOS emphasizing that all courses were conducted in the English language. The Rector also added that education at BHOS was realized totally in line with the education programme of Heriot-Watt University, UK.

Moreover, the Rector said that the exams are supervised by Heriot-Watt University professors and the transparency of students' knowledge assessment was guaranteed. The Rector mentioned that every year the students with the highest entrance scores selected BHOS and the number of the Presidential scholarship winners was increasing. He also said that out of the 25 Presidential scholarship winners from Specialization Group #1, 17 students were studying at BHOS and three of them gathered the top 700 entrance score. E. Gasimov said that according to overall entrance score indicator, BHOS maintained the leadership amongst higher schools of the country. As regards the new BHOS campus, the Rector said that it would be the only campus in Azerbaijan reflecting all necessary educational, research and training components. Elmar Gasimov familiarized Mrs. Tempel with the project of BHOS campus which would meet international standards, and all necessary conditions would be provided for students there. German Ambassador was inormed about that BHOS students enjoyed the privilege to take internship in such companies as SOCAR, Total, BP, Schlumberger, Emerson, Schneider Electric and the significance attached to research at BHOS. The Rector particularly stressed the cooperation with E.ON, a German company, along with the agreement on creation of renewable energy center signed with the President of RWTH University of Aachen, the collaboration largely supported by SOCAR and its partner E.ON. Mr. Gasimov emphasized his interest in establishing partnership relations with German universities.

Mrs. Tempel extended her gratitude to BHOS management for the warm welcome. She focused on cooperation between SOCAR and E.ON. While bringing forward the idea on joint project on renewable energy and organization of a joint conference dedicated to the same topic the Ambassador expressed her hope on establishing close cooperation in this regards. She also underlined the importance of students' mobility and assured of the availability of high quality technical programmes at German universities. Mrs. Tempel also expressed her confidence that BHOS, as a higher school educating specialists for important industrial spheres, would occupy worthy positions in future. While sharing her impressions on the witnessed dynamic development of BHOS, the German Ambassador expressed her commitment and full support to developing relations with BHOS involving German specialists and experts through DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). Mrs. Tempel invited BHOS representatives to participate in international workshops and conferences to be held in her homeland.

In conclusion, Rector Gasimov invited Mrs. Heidrun Tempel to make presentation for BHOS students on a mutually agreed topic. Mrs. Tempel was pleased to accept this invitation.
