Chief engineer explains reason for oil platform fire outbreak in Caspian

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 8

By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:

Emergency situation on the platform #10 in the Caspian Sea wasn't due to the violation of safety rules there, said Balamirza Alirahimov, chief engineer at Azneft, a production division of Azerbaijan's state company SOCAR.

"The main reason was the weather conditions: the hurricane wind, high waves," said Alirahimov at a briefing in Baku, Dec. 8.

He added that the safety rules are and will be further complied with.

Earlier, on Dec. 4, a fire broke out on an offshore platform of SOCAR's Gunashli field, after a strong storm damaged an underwater high-pressure gas pipeline.

As many as 33 people were rescued in an ensuing large-scale operation. Some 23 oil workers are still listed as missing.
