IBA ex-chairman makes final statement in court

A hearing was held in the Baku Grave Crimes Court on Oct. 10 on the criminal case involving the former chairman of the board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) Jahangir Hajiyev and seven people arrested alongside him.

A hearing was held in the Baku Grave Crimes Court on Oct. 10 on the criminal case involving the former chairman of the board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) Jahangir Hajiyev and seven people arrested alongside him.

One of the defendants, director of the InterSecurity company Ibrahim Huseynov made his final statement during the hearing.

“I was not involved in the management of the International Bank. I just ensured security of the bank based on a contract and reported to Emil Mustafayev, a member of the management board, on these activities. The loans taken in the names of my employees were spent on various projects. All of the loans were fully repaid, with only interest debts remaining. I ask for acquittal,” said Huseynov.

Jahangir Hajiyev also made a final statement.

The judges left for a meeting and the next hearing was postponed indefinitely.

Jahangir Hajiyev was arrested on Dec. 5, 2015 under a decision of Baku City Narimanov District Court.

The term of his arrest was prolonged three times.

Hajiyev and seven more people are accused under various articles of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code, including embezzlement in big amounts, abuse of power, fraud causing a major damage, illegal appropriation or embezzlement in big amounts using official position, abuse of authority, and bribery.
