MINISTRY OF ECOLOGY INTERESTED IN CONSTRUCTION OF POLYGONS IN AZERBAIJAN ON WASTES MANAGEMENT

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) is interested in the construction of several polygons on wastes management in Azerbaijani regions, Minister of MENR, Husseyn Bagirov told Trend. These works must be implemented by the country’s government, and private companies may manage them. Such polygons may be built in Mingachevir, Gyanja and
other regions.

Talks with the World bank (WB) and other financial sources, with the British-American BP, which is the largest dangerous wastes owner are currently held.

The project on cleaning of land plots from mercury contamination and building the polygon for burial of toxic wastes in the country has been already implemented in Azerbaijan.

The polygon is located 15 km to the north-west of Sumgaiyt and occupies the area of 50 hectares. Under the project, transfer of dangerous wastes from the plant to the polygon has been completed. The project costing $8 million has been financed by the WB loan and started in December 2002.
