USAID EYES FIRST AID PROJECT

Society Materials 1 July 2005 13:30 (UTC +04:00)

A new project will start in August, to better address first aid problems in Azerbaijan.

Following the announcement, Azerbaijan’s Health Minister Ali Insanov, at a seminar on reproductive health and family planning, said that project would aim to gradually introduce international standards in the health system of the country.

According to him, the project will cover all regions of Azerbaijan, with the wherewithal in the amount of 10 million U.S. dollars to be provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Insanov said that earlier the Government of Azerbaijan approached the World Bank and Asian Development Bank for obtaining necessary funding for the project. However, the corresponding talks failed to yield the results the Government of Azerbaijan was pinning hopes on. “The support from the U.S. Government makes us free from an additional debt burden,” the minister stressed. It is believed that a success of the project will signal wider international support to the implementation of social, particularly, health project in the country.

For his part, U.S. ambassador Reno Harnish, also participating at the seminar, said that Washington pays particular attention to the development of the health system in Azerbaijan. I believe these projects will give an impetus to successful implementation of social programs in Azerbaijan, Harnish said.
