HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS TO PROPOSE HEAD OF STATE TO GRANT AMNESTY TO 54 INMATES AT WORKING GROUP’S NEXT MEETING

On 22 July at 12.00 p.m. at the third meeting in the Milli Mejlis of the working group on political prisoners, consisting of the human rights activists and the Azerbaijani officials the head of the state will be proposed to grant amnesty to 54 inmates, a member of the Working Group, human rights defender Saida Godjamanli told Trend.

In the list, prepared by the human rights activists of the Monitoring center the names of the former OPON (Special police troops) officers, arrested in connection with the events in Gyanja in 1994, as well the unrests, occurred in the capital city on 15-16 October 2003, and of our compatriots being on the search have been included.

Saida Godjamanli noted, that the human rights defenders are supporters of the amnesty act to be signed by the head of the state to include not only the names of 54 political prisoners, but even more inmates. The previous sitting of the Working group took place on 8 July.

The following human rights activists participated in the meeting: Chingiz Ganizade, Novella Djafarogli, Saida Godjamanli, Saadet Eldar Zeynalov, Rena and Murad Saddadinovs, Sahib Mammadov and Zaliha Tairova.

The authorities at the meeting have been represented by the officials of the President’s executive office- head of the law-enforcement department Fuad Aleskerov, head of the pardoning sector Kyamalya Husseynova, senior advisor of the human rights sector Otari Gvaladze, head of the Foreign Ministry department Tair Tagizade, as well as members of the Azerbaijan’s parliamentary delegation to PACE вЂ" Samed Seyidov, Gyultakin Hadjieva, Ali Husseynov and the country’s Prosecution office, the Interior Ministry and the Justice Ministry’s officials.
