The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan developed documents with the purpose of including the Girkan forests in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Ministry told Trend.The documents are submitted to the World Heritage Center.
Girkan forests are protected area. One can meet here 100 species of flora from 140, which are registered in the Red Book of Azerbaijan.
In regard to the protection of these unique forests the Girkan National Park is created on the area of 21435 hectares by the President’s Decree. In the period of the documents checking the IUCN expert from the part of UNESCO Gerhardt Heiss was in Baku and examined the forests and made their evaluation.
