UNESCO will send its experts to Azerbaijan for studying the state of the historical and architectural complex Icheri Sheher (the Old City), the UNESCO Director General Koishiro Matsuura told journalists on 26 August, Trend reports.
He came to such a conclusion after familiarizing with the Old City within his visit to Baku. Icheri Sheher is included into the list of the UNESCO non-material cultural monuments, protected by the organization, he noted. Matsuura expressed regret of the complex’s present state and reported UNESCO will pay more attention to implementation of works on restoring the complex. The UNESCO expert commission will identify the scope of works in this field, Director General noted.
