FOUNDATION OF CATHOLIC CHURCH LAID IN BAKU

The foundation of the Catholic Church has been laid in Baku. The ceremony of the Church’s first stone laying has been timed to the current visit of the Vatican’s official Cardinal Creschenzo Sepe to Azerbaijan, Trend reports.

The Vatican’s envoy laid personally the first stone of the Church, designed for

200 parishioners and which will be built on the personal funds of the late Pope John Paul II, received from sale of his books, as well as donations from abroad.

According to the program of the visit the Vatican representative attended the Martyr’s Cemetery and the grave of the former President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, blessed the shelter for homeless in Baku Nizami district and will attend the Catholic parish.

In the second part of the day the Vatican official will meet with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, chairman of the Caucasus Moslems Board, sheikh-ul-islam hadji Allahshukyur Pashazade and representatives of religious confessions.

It should be noted, the total number of Catholics in Baku is 150 persons, about the same number of foreigners, the Catholics, residing in Baku, the representation said.
