The ombudsman of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova received on 20 September 2005 a special envoy of the Council of Europe Secretary General in Azerbaijan Mats Lindberg, the press service of the Azerbaijan’sombudsman’s office told Trend.
Suleymanova noted the importance of the parliamentary elections in the country for formation of the law-making body, meeting the demands of democracy. She also stressed the importance of raising the awareness for holding the election campaigning, an active participation of the ordinary citizen in socio-political processes in the country’s regions and etc. She also noted, jointly with the Central Election Committee (CEC) of Azerbaijan trainings on election legislation are conducted.
Lindberg noted, in his turn, the Council of Europe welcomes the proposal of Suleymanova to hold a conference on the 55-the anniversary of passing the European Convention on Human Rights in Azerbaijan. The event is scheduled for 10 December 2005, the International Day of Human Rights.
Lindberg voiced also hope for transparent and fair forthcoming elections to the Parliament.
