Stavropol proposes to create terminal in Azerbaijan

On Wednesday, Azerbaijan and Stavropol will sign an agreement on trade-economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov said at a business forum in Baku.

"In 2009, trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia amounted to $1.816 billion, hitting over 60 percent of total trade turnover with CIS countries", Hasanov said.

Foreign trade turnover with Stavropol amounted to $123.3 million last year and exceeds the figure for 2004 twice. Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Stavropol in 2009 reduced by 30 percent. In 2008 turnover amounted to over $200 million.

Governor of the region Valery Gajewski said that Stavropol is one of the most active regional partners of Azerbaijan.

"The most promising areas of cooperation, which will have more attention during the visit, are agriculture, industry, tourism, logistics, oil refining," he said.

He said that the annual demand of Azerbaijan in grain import was 1 million tons, while production of grain in Stavropol hits 7-8 million tons can export more than four million tons annually.

At present, the possibility of creating a transit terminal in Azerbaijan for further shipment of agricultural products in Middle Eastern markets is also discussed, governor said.

"We also need a refinery in the region", he said.

A delegation from Stavropol will participate in the Azerbaijani International Travel and Tourism Fair, which begins its work from April 28.

Today about 15,000 Azerbaijanis live in Stavropol.

Over 120 businessmen from both sides, including about 80 Azerbaijani companies attended the forum.

The forum is organized by AZPROMO, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Economic Development and the Governorate.
