Landfills for disposing of domestic waste and recycling plants will be built in Azerbaijan, Economic Development Ministry official Sahil Babayev told reporters on Thursday.

"There are three main segments of work with household waste - the collection, disposal and recycling. Amount and composition of waste in the country will be determined in preparing a national strategy for managing household waste. If the majority of them will make up the organic waste, then preference will be given to the construction of landfills for waste disposal, and if there will be more products that are suitable for recycling then plants will be built in this direction," Babayev said.

The main direction of the national strategy for managing solid waste in Azerbaijan will be determined by the summer of this year, after which the government will begin preparation.
The construction of Balakhani plant for burnin of domestic solid waste is being implemented at the moment. Its commission is scheduled to the end of 2012.

Cleaning and disinfection points are under construction on the territory of the Balakhani landfill with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year. It is scheduled to be commissioned in mid 2012.
