Iran is now ranked 58th among 60 countries in terms of e-commerce, the Eghtesadonline website quoted a member of the Iranian Society of e-commerce Ali Sanayei as saying.

"Although e-commerce has been promoted significantly in the country during the past five years, international sanctions have caused Iran's position to be pushed down to 58th among 60 countries in this regard," he noted.

On May 15, Press TV quoted Iranian deputy minister of industry, mine and trade Mohammad Sadeq Mofatteh as saying that the Islamic Republic is trying to promote electronic commerce and business among West Asian countries, with Tehran assuming a central role.

"Over the past three years, Iran has managed by procuring an electronic commercial infrastructure to be a pioneer in this field among the West Asian countries," he said.

"Now, Tehran is trying to develop e-commerce on the basis of exchanging trade documents by electronic means among ECO (Economic Cooperation Organisation) member states in West Asia with Tehran having a central role," he added.
